ACC Corner – Tom Wright, ACC Chairman

Alligator Safety

The American Alligator ranges from coastal North Carolina to southern Florida west to central Texas. In North Carolina the largest populations are in Brunswick, New Hanover, Columbus, Onslow and Pender counties. They are seen in other areas of North Carolina and are even seen at the coastal beaches. Alligators are a protected species in North Carolina.  The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission reminds the public that it is illegal to feed, touch, harm, harass or poach an alligator in North Carolina.

Facts about Safety

·        Alligators are shy and usually avoid Human Contact

·        Do not feed Alligators.  It is illegal and alligators that are fed will come to associate humans with food, losing their natural fear.

·        Children, in particular, should not play unattended near water

·        Keep an eye on your pets. Dogs are in more danger than people, do not let dogs swim in open water.

·        If you do encounter an Alligator that charges at you run away fast in a straight line , not zig zag.

The CSPOA Pool – Rick Griffith

The pool season is in full swing and our pool is getting a lot of visits by our members and their guests. We're seeing a lot more families enjoying the pool this year. We appreciate the compliments on how well our Carolina Shores Pool Team keeps our pool clean and manages the pool area.

We have gotten a few comments on how the bottom of the pools look " dirty". The bottom and sides of the pool are NOT dirty. What you're seeing is the discoloration of the pool surface. Our pool is 45 years old and was last resurfaced in 2012. Most resurfacing last about 7-10 years on commercial pools like ours. Our pools are at 12 years. We are getting quotes on having both pools resurfaced during the off season, pending Board approval.

Reminder: Please adhere to the pool rules. They are for EVERYONE'S safety.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

The Book Discussion Group met in the POA clubhouse on Friday, June 21.  Our reading selection for the month was Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue. This novel details the experiences of two New York City families during the 2008 financial crisis: an immigrant family from Cameroon, the Jonga family, and their wealthy employers, the Edwards family. Some of the recurring themes of the story are immigration, the American Dream, class differences,

and family. Several of our members shared immigration experiences of family members or people they had worked with.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, July 19 at 10:00 a.m. in the POA clubhouse. We will be discussing two books, The Measure by Nikki Erlick and The Girls Who Stepped Out of Line by Mari K. Eder.
